Fire Apparatus Driver Training Program 


COURSE OBJECTIVE:


Fire Apparatus Driver Training includes DZ license training and is designed by highly qualified professionals to respond to ever-changing industry and its demands.  This program is intended for all Pre-Service Firefighters or Firefighters to focus on improving the driving ability to read traffic conditions, act accordingly and prevent collisions in both emergency and non-emergency situations.  This program covers basic introduction of applicable NFPA Standards & Ontario Highway Traffic Act rules and legislation, including  current regulatory Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards.  Of course, this program also fully prepares you for the Commercial Driver Ontario DZ License examination.


  • Demonstrate proper driving skills on an obstacle course
  • Demonstrate and explain safe driving and positioning skills
  • Fire Truck Inspection, repair & preventative maintenance check procedures
  • Response - related safety Internal
  • Response - related safety external
  • The impact of vehicle design and maintenance on safety
  • Ontario Highway Traffic Act Rules & Legislation
  • Functional test of the Air Brakes System
  • Demonstrate and explain theory and principles of defensive driving in both emergency and non-emergency situations.

42 Hours Training, Breakdown: 24 Classroom Hours & 18 Hands-On In Vehicle Training

COURSE OUTLINE:
Pine ValleyDriving Academy, Fire Apparatus Driver Training curriculum employs modern technologies and ensures its students are trained in the following subjects;


Knowledge Skills:

  • Certificate:  Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC)
  • Certificate:  Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)
  • Certificate: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015)


Practical Skills:

  • 8 HOURS  one-to-one defensive driving training in a variety of spatial constraints; including traffic, weather and daylight conditions.
  • 10 HOURS  Driver Obstacle Training; including Serpentine, Straight Line, Confined Space, Offset Alley, Diminishing Clearance, Parallel Parking Maneuvers.  Training for observational skills; including identifying hazards, emergency equipment, safe and defensive driving, operate vehicle in accordance with Highway Traffic Act. 


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Ontario Class 'G' License or higher
  • Knowledge verification of Rules of the Road and Signs
  • Grade 10 English or Equivalent
  • MTO approved Medical Form completed


NOTE:

You will receive DZ License upon successful  completion of written and practical test at the DriveTest Center.
